Five Guys isn’t receiving five stars from everyone after its latest menu change.
In social media posts made on March 16, Five Guys announced it has ditched its plastic fry cups for kraft paper bags, and some customers aren’t pleased.
“We’re still using the same fresh-cut potatoes and generous portions, but this new packaging helps fries hold their texture and keeps takeout and delivery fresher, longer,” the burger chain said in its post, adding that the bags are grease-resistant and BPA- and PFAS-free.
As is tradition for when a fast food joint changes things up, some customers have taken to social media to voice their thoughts.
Five Guys Customers Share Their Input on New Fry Bags
Many of the comments regarding the new fry bags are centered around their greasiness.
“The cup kept some grease from soaking through the bag onto your car seats when taking it home,” one Facebook user commented on the Five Guys’ post.
Though Five Guys claims the bags are grease resistant, promotional photos of the new packaging clearly depicts grease spots on the bags and packaging around them.
Many customers have shared a noticed difference in the amount of fries they receive in the paper bags versus the traditional cups, too.
“Can confirm that the portion I got definitely changed, so not loving that for $6 fries,” one Instagram user said on Five Guys’ post. “The portions are smaller with the bag and the grease soaks through much faster. Had the bag fries one time, haven’t been back since,” a Facebook user wrote.
On the other hand, some are satisfied with the new fry packaging.
“Much better than the non-vented paper cups. Guaranteed to be hot on the top and soggy on the bottom as the heat and steam was trapped inside. Thank you!” one Facebook user commented on the Five Guys’ post.
Others understand the dialogue isn’t all that important in the first place.
“I’m indifferent of the container my fries come in, I’m not eating the container,” another Facebook user commented.
Five Guys Responds to Customer Feedback
In response to customer feedback, Christine Cube, Five Guys communications specialist, told USA TODAY the new packaging is the company’s commitment to the environment, as they are made with biodegradable natural kraft paper.
“We want to make sure our customers know our fry portions remain unchanged,” Cube added. “Our extra scoops are absolutely not going away. You’re getting the same portions in the same sizes as our fry cups.”
