Every year, people relocate from state to state, often seeking better opportunities, climates or lifestyles.
According to a January 2026 report from moving service provider HireAHelper, nearly 15 million U.S. adults moved in 2025. While most of the moves (78.49%) were within the same state, more than 3 million people crossed state lines, flocking to Southeast states.
South Carolina is the fastest-growing state in 2025, with a 1.5% population increase fueled by high domestic migration among states that experienced the highest net migration in 2025, with 41,548 people moving into the state, gaining 79.7 residents per 10,000 people.
This influx was driven by the state’s appealing climate, affordable cost of living, and growing job market.
Here’s what else to know, and why more people moved to the Palmetto State in 2025.
What Attracted So Many Movers to South Carolina in 2025?
Cost of living can be a huge factor in determining whether to move somewhere.
According to the 2026 HireAHelper moving migration report, South Carolina’s 2025 population boom was primarily driven by the following.
- South Carolina’s strong job market played a crucial role, with sustained growth in manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics sectors attracting workers from across the nation.
- The state’s affordability, with a relatively lower cost of living compared to high-cost states like New York, California and Illinois, made it an attractive destination for many.
- The Palmetto State’s lifestyle factors, such as its warm, mild climate and coastal charm, continued to attract retirees and residents seeking a higher quality of life.
- Regional growth was particularly notable in high-demand areas, including coastal metros and regions along major interstate corridors.
2025 U.S. Migration Trends
The HireAHelper team examined 14,977,223 national moves recorded between January and December 2025 to determine how U.S. migration patterns differ from state to state.
Each move in the dataset represents an actual relocation, reflecting real moves as they occur.
The analysis focused on:
- Origins and destinations of adult moves
- Intrastate versus interstate flow
- Demographic characteristics of moving people
