Imagine not having to pay any property taxes to your city. That’s the reality for homeowners in a handful of communities across the U.S.

In these places, you might still have to pay some property taxes to another entity, such as the county in which you reside. But the city itself does not dip into your pocket.

Here are cities where homeowners get a break on their property taxes.

    Sedona, Arizona

Estimated population: 9,700 as of 2020

Although you won’t pay property taxes to the City of Sedona, you will owe a monthly sewer fee and city sales taxes.

Sedona is among the cities that appear in the story “10 of the Best Places to Retire in Arizona (From Tiny Towns to Tucson).”

Estimated population: 42,200 as of 2020

You won’t pay property taxes to the City of Peachtree Corners. However, you will owe both property and motor vehicle taxes to Gwinnett County.

The bill you receive breaks down taxes earmarked for the county, city and Gwinnett County Public Schools.

    Apache Junction, Arizona

Estimated population: 38,500 as of 2020

On its website, the City of Apache Junction proudly asks residents to look at their property tax bill for the “city tax” line item. Then, it goes on to note that the line item “will be blank or contain zeros.”

Instead, Pinal County handles property taxes for homeowners in the region.

Sales taxes are a different matter. That rate in Apache Junction is 9.1%, which combines fees from the city, state and county. Of that, 2.4% goes to the city.

    Ballwin, Missouri

Estimated population: 31,100 as of 2020

The City of Ballwin says it “currently does not assess a real estate tax.” But residents shouldn’t get too excited — St. Louis County, area school districts and other agencies all collect property taxes.

In Ballwin, the sales tax is 8.738% and the utility tax is 7%.

    Stafford, Texas

Estimated population: 17,700 as of 2020

Go to the official Stafford city website and the first thing you will see is this proclamation: “The city with no city property taxes.” However, Fort Bend County does collect property taxes.

    Oak Brook, Illinois

Estimated population: 8,200 as of 2020

Oak Brook does not collect property taxes. However, it does have a sales tax rate of 7.5%. The village itself receives 1.5% of that amount, with the rest going to other entities.

    Gun Barrel City, Texas

Estimated population: 6,200 as of 2020

Gun Barrel City does not collect property taxes. However, the city does have a sales tax rate of 8.25%. Of that amount, 1% is earmarked for the city itself.

    Fenton, Missouri

Estimated population: 4,000 as of 2020

Fenton has no municipal personal property or real estate taxes. Alas, St. Louis County taxes do apply.

The sales tax rate in Fenton is 8.238% for non-food sales and 4.850% on qualified food sales.

    Maynardville, Tennessee

Estimated population: 2,500 as of 2020

Maynardville has no city property tax. That might make it a good alternative to living in Knoxville, which is just 15 minutes away.
